Goals: To analyze how the characters and conflicts in a novel can work together to create a deeper, symbolic meaning

Opener: Five minute free-write! Write about anything you’d like for five minutes, and try to write as much as you can. If you’re having trouble getting started, you might possibly write about your day so far, your year so far, a law you think should be changed (and why), your favorite historical figure, the speed of light, what the color orange might sound like, an entire city made of old cars, a colony on the moon, or the smell after it rains.

Handouts in Class: none

Terms and Vocabulary: see yesterday

Work Assigned and Collected:
1. We got into groups and applied what we learned yesterday to the book; the instructions are below:
  1. Focus on Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and Simon
  2. Who represents each part? Why? What does the fourth boy represent? Why?
    1. Have evidence for each boy. Instead of quotes, cite very specific actions without looking at the book if you can.
    2. So NOW, what new meanings are created by the boys interactions, struggles, conflicts, and deaths?
    3. What new message could this novel have about the human mind?

Homework:
  • Go back to the beginning of the study guide and your notes, and begin reviewing carefully. We will most likely have a 10-12 quiz this Friday, and we will begin the final essay this weekend.
