Goals: To discuss how themes and characterization help connect texts to our lives.
Opener: No written opener. Get into your groups (turn your desks together if they are not already and make sure there is space for me to walk between all groups.) As a group, decide on two other films, novels, plays, television shows, graphic novels, or other narratives that seem to connect thematically to Lord of the Flies. In other words, what other narratives have a similar message or comment? What new ideas come up when you compare these three things? What new lessons do we learn by comparing them? Clearly write what the message or comment that the text makes is, as well as how it compares and contrasts to the messages in Lord of the Flies. You may use the sentence frame below.
One of the themes in ___________________ that connects to Lord of the Flies is the idea that _____(thematic message in one of the texts you chose)________. This is similar to Lord of the Flies because _____________________________, but it is different in that ____________________.
