Goals: To analyze how an author’s use of language can connect and develop theme and meaning
Opener: Remember that a literary symbol is an object, event (or sometimes even a character) that has a deeper and broader meaning in the context of the work as a whole. Symbols are like metaphors, except that the tenor is much more complex and meaningful, while the vehicle remains very simple. Think about Mrs. Schächter in chapter two. Explain what happens to her, how she responds, and how the people respond to her. Then, explain what you think Mrs. Schächter might symbolize in the context of the whole book.
