Goals: To understand what it means to do a close reading; to read a poem for both the literal and figurative level of meaning
Opener: Have your poem from yesterday out, in addition to your opener. Pretend like you are planning to write an essay about the poem in which you describe what the poem says, and what deeper meanings it might have. Write a brainstorm for this essay as your opener today. Go through, stanza by stanza, and explain what the poem means.
Handouts in Class: none
Terms and Vocabulary: stanza, line, literal, figurative, sentence, to decode, metaphor
Work Assigned and Collected:
1. We shared annotations, took notes on vocabulary, and read the poem together
2. You began deepening your annotations by paraphrasing the meaning of each stanza
