Goals: To use effective rhetorical structure to develop and support a claim
Opener: Use this opener to discuss, explain, and review what you know about colonialism — both from in school and outside of it. You may write about history or experiences, or both. You may focus on one specific country’s colonial past, many countries’ pasts, or one individual’s experience. If you and/or your family have come to the U.S. from a country with a colonial history, you could talk about that. You may talk about it from either the perspective of the colonized or the colonizer. You may also discuss the results evidence of colonialism today and how people have dealt with it (this is called post-colonialism). You can go deep, or you can stay on the surface. It’s up to you!
