Goals: To write a structured and well-supported expository paragraph about theme

Opener: Imagine you are trying to convince your parent or guardian to let you drive to school on your own (or something else you are motivated to convince them to do, but that may be a difficult sell). Write a paragraph using the following outline that does this effectively. Each number should be a sentence.

  1. Clearly state your central claim.
  2. Go into more detail about why and how this claim should happen.
  3. Give one fact or detail that supports your claim.
  4. Explain how your fact or detail from #3 supports your claim.
  5. Give a second fact or detail that supports your claim.
  6. Explain how your fact or detail from #5 supports your claim.
  7. Give a final fact or detail that supports your claim.
  8. Explain how your fact or detail from #7 supports your claim.
Provide a concluding statement in which you explain to your audience why this is a benefit or is important in their life.

Terms and Vocabulary: none

Handouts in Class: Assignment on Google Classroom (with resources)

Work Assigned and Collected:
1. We reviewed recommendations for paragraph structure, practiced making claims, and went over the paragraph assignment on Google Classroom.

Homework:
  • Yellow forms — fill out w/your guardians, return to me, the health office, main office, or attendance by Monday.
  • We will work on theme paragraphs tomorrow and Friday, and they will be due Monday. You will have a draft to revise Friday. There will not be a chapter 5 quiz, but you MUST use one piece of evidence from chapter 5 in your paragraph.
  • Read to p. 84 by TOMORROW. As you read, make at least three very short notes per page about WHO is in it, WHAT they do and say, WHERE/WHEN the action takes place, WHY people say and feel the things they do and WHY things happen, and HOW conflicts arise and are resolved. You may need to make more than three notes -- ask yourself if you could summarize the page with your notes. If not, you need more notes.
