Goals: To compare and contrast our own experiences with the characters in the novel. To practice using evidence and expressing claims.
Opener: Do you think there should be certain novels or plays that all students in every school read? Why or why not? Make sure you go beyond considerations of what is fun or easy, and consider what is right or important. How important do you think it is that different cultures, beliefs, and societies are represented in the reading you do in school? You can only read so many books in twelve years -- how should people who design curricula (what gets taught) choose which cultures and experiences are represented?
