Goals: To use prereading to create a more analytical and critical reading of a text
Opener: The book we are going to read takes place in Nigeria, before European colonization. What cultural stereotypes about West Africa or Africa as a whole have you encountered? When you think about West African literature (even if you’ve never read any!), what generalizations come to mind? What kinds of generalizations, stereotypes, and standardized images and ideas do you think you will have to fight when reading this book? How will you do that? What knowledge of colonization and the history of West Africa can you bring to your reading to help you understand the background of the novel?
