Goals: To connect characterization, symbolism, and imagery to the themes and ideas in a text; to make inferences and draw conclusions from a text based on evidence
Opener: Think about the big ideas Lord of the Flies brings up, maybe involving good and bad leadership, the tendency of people to confuse fantasy and reality when frightened, or the different ways people decide who is “smart,” popular, or acceptable. Brainstorm connections to real life — either your own experiences, things you have seen in the media, or historical events you have learned about. Why does this book matter?
