Goals: To be able to recognize and write a variety of compound and complex sentence styles
Opener: Philosophy Phriday! Write as much as you can about one, some, or all of the following questions. What are sentences for? What is grammar for? Why do we have grammar “rules”? If people didn’t write using sentences, what other structures could we use to organize information? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of this? Think about the way you speak with your friends, and what sounds natural. What are some of the grammatical “rules” that describe the casual language you use that are different from formal or academic English?
Handouts in Class: Parts of Speech and Verb Tenses, packet from last week
