Goals: To annotate a text in order to connect details to deeper meanings
Opener: What would true world peace be like? As I’m sure you know, there are many bloody conflicts, some involving the U.S. and some not, going on right now all around the globe. The UN declared 2016 the worst year for children, to date, in Syria due to the horrific conditions the war has wrought. There has consistently been warfare and/or brutal conflict somewhere on Earth for the last 3000 years. Overwhelming evidence points to humans being a warlike species. Paradoxically, however, we also recognize individuals like Elie Wiesel for their work towards peace. Nearly everyone, especially those who have been touched by warfare, can dream of peace. Also, modern technology has advanced more in the last 200 years than it did during the previous 7,000 years, and people around the globe are more connected today than they ever have been. Discuss what you think it will take to achieve world peace.
